\nThe walls of the seminar room were decorated with great photographs of our local wild bees. The exhibition tables were filled with all sorts of useful things about the bee. Various nesting aids alternated with insect displays, books and brochures as well as a large selection of seeds. Hermann Hunfeld, a wild bee researcher, came from Dortmund to give our participants a lot of interesting information about the lives of the wild bees and our nesting aids in a two-hour lecture. The way of life and development of the species nesting in breeding tubes, as well as ecological and economic importance in general, were the subject of his lecture. He put particular emphasis on protective measures by cultivating suitable food crops.\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n After a lunch break with bread rolls and coffee, we continued by building small nesting aids made of bamboo tubes. Measuring, sawing, grinding – with a little manual skill and patience, everyone could assemble their nesting aid. Afterwards there was a talk about the wild bees in Sammatz, which are currently the subject of intense research. The various wild bee species – such as wasp bees, sand bees, blood bees or silk bees – were introduced. Some specimens were passed around and could be viewed with magnifying glasses. As so often with natural history topics, the variety and the fascinating details were the most inspiring aspects. No two bee species are the same, and their ways of life are radically different. Some live solitarily, others in municipalities. There are still somewhat unexplored ways of life, such as the formation of small groups with unrelated workers and changing queens were presented.\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n Overall it was a nice, varied seminar day. The interest in the wild bee house was so great that in the future we want to offer a daily workshop dedicated to this topic. Let’s all help to ensure that the bees are ok! With the design of bee-friendly gardens, everyone can do something practical to help.
