Awarded!
UNESCO Germany awards the Michaelshof

As part of UNESCO’s sustainability program (ESD-2030), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Commission for UNESCO annually award outstanding initiatives.

On Wednesday, in a highly official, albeit digital, event, Michaelshof was honored as one of 29 initiatives for its commitment to ESD and the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals.

We’re incredibly happy, because what we were awarded for has always been important to us: to bring people on the way and nature and man together. This requires a view on both that does not exclude soul and spirit.
In 2022, we will be happy to take you with us a little bit into this world – beauty, sustainability, friendship, spirituality, biodiversity, diversity, Demeter and much more!

18. APRIL – SAMMATZ
TULIP-FESTIVAL

Our tulips and daffodils attract garden lovers from the region, from Hamburg and further afield to Sammatz every year. No wonder: With a total of about 150,000 tulip bulbs that we – newsletter readers know that – have placed in all gardens in November, it is probably one of the largest tulip blooms in northern Germany.
On Easter Monday we celebrate a festival in honor of the noble spring flowers. Enjoy the blossoms and look forward to some surprises we have prepared for you! We have also thought of the children, and our café is of course open with delicious refreshments for tulip walkers.

What one learns on the construction site…

I honestly never thought I’d be at home on a construction site one day. I had my whole life planned out, studying, wearing expensive-looking clothes and studying for my business degree. I was focusing and cramming formulas, going to the library and high on coffee. I never dreamed in my life that I would end up in construction someday. You don’t get your hands dirty for money (most of the time)!

Then at some point the day came when I had finished my studies and reached the goal of four years of hard work, even with Español and everything! And then I came to Sammatz. And suddenly everything was different, suddenly I got a breath of fresh air, suddenly my body was challenged – carrying things, fixing things, swinging brushes.

And you know what? In a certain way, I learned more than I had in months of cramming for university. I learned to tackle things, I learned to be exact where I had to, and to drop perfectionism where I was allowed to. I learned to rely on others (for example, when Marc and I ‘fixed’ a house while half a hurricane roared across the site).

Now I’m learning how to organize a team and pay attention to a thousand little things without losing sight of the big picture. I’m learning how to look at my team members and how to recognize my own mistakes. I’m learning how a lot of things in life really work, just by looking at a small construction site that has become my home.

Thank you Flachsenberg, thank you Baustelle, thank you Sammatz!

PS: we still have a few places left in the team. If you feel like it just write me an e-mail! Happy painting!

This is also the place for me to show you some before and after pictures of the wonderful library attic. Just some months ago this was quite a dark place, now the construction team turned it into something that may or may not be the most beautiful room in Sammatz.

Oaxaca – Mexico
Hello Sammatz family!!!

With this letter I would like to thank you very much for what your project has done for me (and I’m sure you didn’t expect it!!).
It all started when I was done with university. I had nothing left to do in my beautiful city in the south of Mexico, Oaxaca, so I started traveling. In 2016, I started working on cruise ships as a bartender. It sounds like a great job, and it is, because you get a really good salary. But on the other hand, you have to work 10 to 14 hours every day for 6 to 8 months, then you go home for 2 months and come back for a similar amount of time.
I wanted something different. I invested my savings in a plot of land; at least that way I wouldn’t waste the fruits of all those years of hard work. But I still had no plan how to get away from the ships and continue living. I couldn’t think of anything; all the work without a break had drained my brain, made it unproductive.

One beautiful, cool February in the (so great and life-changing) year of 2020, I visited Sammatz, worked a few hours making cheese, sanded benches with the construction crew, fed the lambs and calves, and dug trenches for the sewer system for the new housing projects. All the while, I was having fun and having conversations that were meaningful to my life.

At this point, you may be wondering…. What did Sammatz do to me?
WE LOVE TO ENTERTAIN YOU

WHOEVER SAYS LAMBS MUST ALSO SAY GOAT KIDS! – no sooner are the little lambs in kindergarten, the baby goats tumble. At least as sweet and wonderfully hoppy!
PRESERVING ROOM – again a renovation in the final stages. The workroom that Christian has been longing for will be ready to move in in April!
HEADS ARE OILED – the garden team took care of our art in the past weeks and took all our statues by Waltraud Schroll out of the gardens, sanded and oiled them. Now they are ready to be admired again!

The party is over! Since the Argentine cattle baron Maxi entered the food marketing of Michaelshof, other strings are pulled. Cattle not driven to the pampas? Cheese not paid for? Whether colleague or customer – pardon is not given. And the best: Instead of annoying phone calls, the strict maxi-mization runs directly through the computer. Magic!
Psssst! It’s only half as bad, or maybe not true at all 🙂 Maxi is charming and friendly, on the inside anyway fine like a tender steak. He wouldn’t hurt a fly. We love his energy, his expertise and his affectionate humor.

Let’s do it the latin way!
