Hardly has the last snow melted when they appear — the colors of spring! The vibrant diversity of life returns with the early bloomers: the yellow winter aconites, the crocuses in yellow and purple, and the snowdrops with their radiant white greeting us from the still somewhat weary brown-green of the winter meadows. Soon the daffodils in yellow-orange dresses join them, and toward April the fantastic blaze of colors of the tulips follows. After the long time of darkness, spring spreads itself into the world — like a colorful answer to the sun, which at midday has already regained its strength.

10 Years of Volunteering
Sammatz around the world

Once upon a time there was a small village in Germany, Lower Saxony. In 1985 a group of friends settled there with the dream of establishing a community in the countryside. A place where people from all corners of the world could meet and build a way of living together based on healthy agriculture and genuine friendship — a way of life that points toward the future. In those first years so much happened: building, experimenting, gains and losses, both outside and on the inside.
At the latest when around 2011 the “Young Wild Ones” really got going, the question arose: Why not international? While Hannah, Anton, Malte B., Jakob, Klara, Antonia, Daniel & Co. were creating the gardens or building up the farm, they wondered what other people their age might be doing around the world at that very moment, whether they had the same questions about life, love, and meaning. One thing led to another, and on February 17, 2016 our first volunteer helper appeared in our little village! And Martino, a young man from the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, was followed in that same year by dozens of international helpers who came to actively support Michaelshof in exchange for board and lodging.

2016
And life? Suddenly it was radically different. Exciting. Exotic. International. Now they were there — the young people from all over the world — and with them all the stories, all the emotions, the dreams and hopes, and the curiosity about this place in northern Germany where they had landed, sometimes more, sometimes less by chance.
The first big joint project: the Waldsee. Right in the middle of winter people dug, built walls, and worked like crazy. With a colorful mix of languages and — despite the weather — plenty of motivation. You can tell if you see the lake nowadays!
2017
Next came maintaining and expanding our areas — the gardens, the vegetable and medicinal herb fields, the agriculture and stables built in 2014, and much more.

2018
After two years of volunteering, everyone involved knew: this has a future! Not only because we appreciate the extra helping hands in our areas, but also because of everything that happens in between. So together with a volunteer team we began building our “Youth Hostel,” the Blue House, which can accommodate about 50 people in shared rooms, until in…

2019
…we were ready to move in! Fun fact: the requirement for the large common room was that 70 people should be able to dance together there in a circle.
|
|
2020-2022
When the whole world more or less came to a standstill because of Covid, of course some volunteers were still on site. So we spent the coming months, freed from visa regulations because traveling was no longer possible, as an XXL extended family.
And meanwhile: we built our community settlement on Flachsenberg, produced food, took care of agriculture, and much more — until life in full swing started again!

2023
Our first Volunteer Festival! A weekend full of cultures, their traditions, their foods, plus music from all over the world. Volunteers present their countries and invite the community as well as guests to join.
This year on August 8 and 9 from 12.00–18.00.

February 17, 2026 – 10 Years of Volunteering
What a ride! Ten years in which strangers became friends. Ten years in which Sammatz was a temporary home for many — and for some a place that has touched their lives permanently. What once began as an idea is today a natural part of our everyday life and our identity. English and Spanish can be heard through the gardens, at the dining table, in the fields. Our children grow up with the world right outside the front door — not in theory, but very practically.
What has grown here is far more than a program. It is a living network of relationships, friendships, and stories that reaches far beyond Sammatz. And we are curious to see where it will carry us next.

Hi Felix! Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Hello dear readers, I’m Felix. I’ve been living and working at Michaelshof for almost six years. I originally came here as a volunteer in search of something new. Now I’m a permanent part of the Michaelshof team and have already been involved in many different areas of our initiative. At the moment I’m working on the project “Opening of our New Organic Market.”

Exciting! How did that come about?
It actually started back when I stayed in Sammatz after my volunteering time and took over the shop at the Ark Farm. I had fallen in love with working in the shop and the shopkeeper position was open. So suddenly I got the opportunity to try myself out as a shop manager and take care of the organic assortment for the community and our visitors. I really enjoyed that. As it often goes with us, other professional challenges followed — like the market wagon, the finance department, and working with the kids in our children and youth home.
At the end of March, after a year of construction, we’re opening the new large organic market in the village center. This time the position of project manager was open, which is really urgently needed to put together the new assortment and take care of the final details — and I was really excited to dive back into the topic! Here we are 😄

What makes you the perfect shop boss?
I love organic and I love food! I’ve always believed that food is not a side issue but kind of a foundation for all of us. That’s why I’m also incredibly happy that the new organic market is three times as big as our current one, which gives us so many possibilities — not only with a diverse range of organic foods but also with non-food items for everyday life.
And what else will the new market offer?
Well, besides the size, which is of course the most important thing and allows us to offer shopping carts to our customers from now on, the direct proximity to the café is also super practical.
It’s important to me that every customer has a pleasant and exciting shopping experience in our organic market. Of course our ultra-good own products play a big role — bread, cheese, meat, but also preserves, tea, and cosmetics will have their prominent place in the market. Being able to sell our own products and complement them with a top organic assortment from our carefully selected suppliers makes me happy. That way the weekly shopping becomes an experience!
And what will happen to the old farm shop?
As always there are lots of ideas, but one thing is certain: you, our visitors, will definitely benefit from it in the future. Stay curious!

How We See Things…
…Community Life 3

|
|
Let’s imagine throwing many pebbles into the water. Each pebble is a person; each has a close circle of friends, a wider one, and perhaps a rather distant one. In this way our community of around 300 people consists of many small groups of friends that overlap like the concentric circles created by pebbles in water. Everyone is somehow connected with one another and shares the basic conviction of how enriching such a life in a community can be. Children and young people with disabilities experience inclusion here as a natural part of life. They play with all the children on site, have contact with the many students who work here for internships, and so on. Inclusion as something normal — as it makes sense and as it should be.
Something is always in motion. Boredom is rare. There is hardly much time for watching TV or playing on the phone. If the frustration level is occasionally exceeded, there are certainly exceptions here as well 😊. And of course there are problems and crises as everywhere else — perhaps even more so where so many people, all so different and coming from such different directions, come together.

|
Yet one might think of Goethe’s fairy tale where it says: “And what is more valuable than gold? Conversation.” Because conversation plays an important role at Michaelshof. Only through conversation can the individual develop; only through conversation can doors open that might otherwise remain closed for a long time — or forever. Friendships arise: sometimes simply feeling understood is already a great treasure. Of course this also requires the other person who understands. Life itself is the best exercise for this. And if it doesn’t work the first time… patience, tolerance, and time — then much becomes possible.
And somehow everyone who lives and works here — or who visits us as a volunteer or simply as a guest — is interested in the deeper questions of life. What is the meaning? Where do I come from, where am I going? Can natural science alone explain how a dandelion has the power to break through solid asphalt? Is there one God, several, or none at all? Is my soul and the soul of another, in its uniqueness and depth, perhaps a hint of our divine origin? Is everything really to be understood as flatly as the world today would like to suggest? The list of questions could be extended endlessly, just like the topics of conversation that move people here. No one remains only in their familiar milieu; people encounter completely different life concepts, habits, pleasant or perhaps sometimes irritating characteristics. That keeps one young and keeps life fresh, teaches flexibility and agility, and gives us space for development.

|
Basically everyone wants to become a better person and acquire more and more abilities. We think this lies in human nature. Added to this is something that almost everyone here brings in their own way: a more or less “green” awareness. How can I deal with nature in such a way that it becomes a friend to me and not merely something to be exploited or used by humans? The conclusions each individual draws from this in their own behavior are extremely diverse.

|
|
At Michaelshof there are just as many meat lovers as there are vegetarians and vegans. Everyone simply has their needs and their reasons. All of them are understandable. What is needed is tolerance, just as everywhere else. We do not believe that the fate of the world is decided at the dining table. Nor by how a person is sexually oriented, what their political convictions are, or what their cultural background may be. What matters alone, as the saying goes, is whether one’s heart is in the right place.
At the same time Michaelshof clearly stands in the tradition of Central European values, such as Christian festivals and many other things. Whoever comes here knows that this forms the framework of life at Michaelshof. Yet we gladly and enthusiastically embrace the cultural values that come to us from all over the world and that enrich and complement our way of life everywhere.

You can perhaps see why community appears to us as a meaningful form of life. We like to see ourselves as a model project that can inspire other people elsewhere — and in different ways — to found similar projects. We consider our idea of a modern village to be quite viable for the future. Everywhere today there is a visible need for new social forms and new forms of cooperation. Why not try it this way for a change? It may be unusual, but it is certainly fruitful.

Café Season Opening – March 14, 2026

Has anyone missed us yet? – Yes, we also found the past two months without the delicious coffee, the homemade cakes, the cool drinks, the ice cream, and the big savory menu of treats quite tough. As soon as the sun comes out, our hotline starts ringing with the question of whether the café is already open. At the moment we are still in winter break and preparing for the new season, but…

Farm Life – Lambs & Piglets
|
|
|
During a visit to the Ark Farm you can currently watch the adorable baby animals taking their first steps. In our barns the little ones run around to their heart’s content and explore their new home.
|
|
|
The fluffy lambs and, right across from them, the cute baby Angler Saddleback piglets are enjoying the first warm days of spring just as much as their mothers. Lambing season always means quite a lot of work and nighttime feeding shifts for our stables team, but with a sight like this it is absolutely worth it.
|
|
|
|
Pssst: Starting March 21, you are warmly invited again to cuddle lambs at the Ark Farm. Every Saturday and Sunday at 12 pm and at 3 pm.

Fermenting – Live Food for All
When it comes to veggies, we at Michaelshof are spoiled with our own Demeter vegetables all summer long. But where do the vitamins come from in winter, and how can we make use of supposed “kitchen waste,” meaning vegetable leftovers, so that they don’t just become compost but turn into digestible, stomach-friendly power food?

Jéronimo from Colombia has the answer: fermenting!

For about a year now the Latin American food enthusiast has been supplying us with all kinds of colorful creations from large jars. He calls his fermented creations “Alive Food”. Through fermentation many valuable nutrients are preserved. At the same time natural lactic acid bacteria develop that support the intestinal flora and actively promote digestion. Alive indeed.

Carnival at the Selma Lagerlöf School
When Cologne and Rio celebrate Carnival, of course the celebration at our special education school in the neighboring village of Wietzetze, the Selma Lagerlöf School, cannot be missing. The kids from grades 1–9, mostly from our child and youth welfare facility but also from the region, had already been thinking about their costumes weeks in advance.
This year’s theme: Marketplace! The cheerful festivities took place between colorful house backdrops that the craft group had designed beforehand. The mayor (Gisela, our school director) opened the 1,000-year celebration of the carnival city, and everyone was allowed to sign the golden book of the city — princesses, the rich as well as Robin Hood, the market people, the father of Pippi Longstocking, the bakers, the animals and many more.
Afterwards the program included the self-written song of the music group, in which all students and all teachers were given their own verses, and the sketches performed by the theater group. After the successful celebration the colorful market life began! At the various stalls there were all kinds of things to try — filled rolls, delicious cake, or the chocolate fountain where the fresh fruits from the market could be dipped directly. In the game hall you could try your luck at roulette, take part in the car race, or visit the disco next door.
All the villagers went home happily entertained. A memorable day!

Together with Lea you will dive into the world of our dairy and learn step by step how delicious cheese is made from fresh milk. A workshop to take part in and enjoy:

For her tennis career, the Brazilian had already been living in Europe since the age of 13. At 17 she decided to take a new path and turn her back on competitive sports. – “There’s still so much to see, the world to discover, and plenty to do in life!” With the question of what truly excites her, she came up with the idea in 2020, during a conversation with a friend, to do volunteering in Europe.

|
During her research she came across Michaelshof and a photo of Sara Lou. She thought to herself: “Such a friendly woman — I have to go there!” She immediately called our hotline and two days later she was standing in Sammatz with her suitcase. Today, almost six years later, Sara is her best friend. It can hardly be described as anything other than a fateful encounter.
|
|
|
But first, back to her volunteering time: originally it was supposed to be three weeks, during which she helped wherever her energy was needed — in the garden, in the kitchen, and so on. Because living together with the volunteers and the community was so much fun, the three weeks quickly turned into three months, then the first year, and so on…
She worked her way into many different areas — construction, the confectionery, and soon also agriculture. For almost two years Gabi worked with Anton, Jakob and others taking care of the animals, especially goats and sheep, as well as agriculture in Banratz. When she thinks back, she immediately hears the German band Die Ärzte in her ears — “Junge, warum hast du nichts gelernt” playing on the car radio during the many ferry crossings, which certainly helped her now perfect German. Why did she stay? “I don’t remember exactly anymore, but I remember that I kept asking myself why everyone was so nice to me and interested in me. When I realized that they truly meant it from the heart, I was convinced that this was the right place for me.”

In 2022, through her friend Lilianne, she started working in the vegetable team, where they chopped weeds together early in the morning. There she developed more and more enthusiasm for working in the fields and so, in a way, first fell in love with the vegetables and then with our vegetable gardener Daniel. Since then the two of them have been the absolute dream team for Sammatz vegetables.

What Gabi likes most about her job? “It’s incredibly beautiful to see the whole process from seed to vegetable. I like thinking about how much water a plant needs and what kind of soil, and timing everything in the best possible way so that later we can supply the community and the wider region with lots of vegetables. You really get to know the plants that way. And you see our effort of the year in the harvest. If I messed something up, you can see it in the harvest — and if I took good care of things, you can see that too. I love it!”
Because the two of them cannot manage the cultivation of the 6 hectares alone, they receive help throughout the year from several international newcomers, volunteers from all over the world, and students doing agricultural internships. The demanding field work, combined with the task of motivating young people again and again, is not always easy, but: “It’s worth it. They simply take something with them! Sure, also how to grow vegetables — but above all the kids notice exactly how you treat them, whether you take them seriously or not. That’s an important experience: being taken seriously as a person. Many of them still write messages to me and ask if they can come back.”

What else she has learned along the way? “I think to be a little less selfish and simply look at what really matters in the big picture. Then the work becomes much easier and you struggle less 😉” Gabi is a true community whirlwind and jumps in with exactly that spirit wherever her help is needed. Whether in the garden, the café, agriculture, at Peronnik, or recently in our organic market finishing team: if it’s important and makes sense for the cause, the enthusiastic young woman with the fiery Brazilian temperament is ready to go.
