Summer: Large umbrellas shine above colorful flower pots on the typical stone wall. Crowded tables and a buzz of voices. Service-staff dressed in classic black and white flit back and forth; on a summer Sunday it’s clear to see that the café am Michaelshof has become one of the most popular destinations in the region. The audience is mixed – older guests and gastronomy experts from the area sit next to families on an afternoon trip. At the next table young volunteers from all over the world chat happily in English, Spanish and Turkish. The waitress taps the order into the iPad, while on the village road, the sheep trot to the pasture or a group of ducks traverse the garden in single file. The scent of roses, lilies and oleander surrounds the guests, inviting them to take a walk in the

Best quality treat
The cosy, bright café offers a selection of sumptuous cakes – all freshly baked, with no additives and made with organic ingredients. This honesty can be tasted in every bite. The more than twenty varieties of organic ice cream are also something special. Whether vanilla or salted caramel, both the classics besides the more exotic flavours have their loyal fans. You simply cannot get enough of this fine ice cream, even after many scoops eaten over many weeks.
The café serves up the usual coffees of an urban in-café, with cocoa and teas of great variety – the most popular are the fine herbal teas, which are cultivated and mixed in Sammatz.
If you are hungry or have had enough of cake, you can order hearty dishes like the gratinated Sammatzer Ziegentaler, hearty soups – including vegan – or a Brettljause made with our own cheese and sausage specialties. The breakfast menu offers equal variety. On Sundays and public holidays guests can expect a sophisticated rustic breakfast buffet.
It need not be mentioned that the products here are always of organic quality, from the coffee beans to the scrambled eggs. For the buffet we recommend making a reservation. Also on sunny weekends and during the holidays it is worth giving us some notice.
A base in the garden paradise
When the kids can no longer sit still, they can play outside at the well; inside there are games and a corner for the little ones. Children, cyclists and wheelchair users are all welcome in the Café am Michaelshof. Dogs are also allowed, but please keep them on a leash for safety.
It goes without saying that larger groups and celebrations can be hosted. We are open for unusual requests. The Café team likes to do what it takes to make the visit to Sammatz a real event.
Been sat too long at the cozy tables? Then it’s time for a tour of the magical park landscape around the café! Garden lovers and those who love beautiful nature can expect an experience that is hard to come across in the locality. An expert tour of the garden is possible upon request (please call 05858/97030). The signposted paths through the park also lead to the large playground, the open stables of the farm and the farm shop, where you can buy some delicacies eaten in the café to once again enjoy at home.
Unfortunately it can’t stay summer forever. At a certain point, the umbrellas have to be folded in – in the transitional period, the largest is still heated. But even if it gets cold, wet and dark, you can still stop by. (Please note the seasonally changing opening times!). There’s nothing more cosy than sitting in the warmth on a rainy day, enjoying a hot crepe with chocolate filling and a steaming punch.
