«Native Trees and Shrubs», 13.07.2019 in the House of Nature

After a brief introductory session, the seminar began with a short presentation in which we discussed the various characteristics of trees and shrubs. After the ‘dry theory’, the participants quickly became active themselves. In order to prepare for the excursion, it was necessary to work on individual tasks, such as the assignment of different types of leaf edges, positions and venation, as well as familiarising ourselves with the correct terms for the distinction of different forms of leafs.

Theory part in the House of Nature

After lunch, we began our two-hour excursion through the Sammatz Gardens. There was a lot of drawing, looking and marvelling. Sunken leaf tips here, asymmetrical leaf nodes there, hair on the underside of leaves, easily breaking branches, hollow stems and brown pulp. There was a lot to make notes on about the 50 chosen species. In the end, heads began to drop and we needed a break before we continued with the final part in the evening.

We concluded the seminar with a circular walk of approximately 3 km through the Sammatz natural environment. During the beautiful walk there was the opportunity to explore a variety of trees and shrubs. The special feature here was that the seminar participants had to determine the plants themselves and explain to others how they were able to recognise the species. The path led through a mixed forest with its typical trees, surrounded by numerous shrubs and meadows. The damp soil located near fish ponds offered a completely different insight to the otherwise predominantly dry locations in the area.

The concept of the seminar with one theory and two practice parts as well as the active self-participation worked out – the participants obviously enjoyed trying out and repeating in order to consolidate everything that they learned.
