The days are getting shorter, the dahlia garden is getting more colourful!

Between the goose meadows and the old cherry tree, around 80 varieties of dahlias, our flowering wonders, are smiling at you at Michaelshof. Not only we, but also the many bees, bumblebees and insects love the unfilled dahlia flowers, where they find nectar and pollen. Flower after flower they form, sprouting in abundance in all imaginable colours and shapes. Yes, the abundance. A breath of paradise. The splendour of colour, a reminder of the wealth hidden in the human soul. The chaotic growth in the green herb: flowing-juicy, pure life – and yet shaped in enchanting ways.

The Aztecs saw the dahlia as a symbol of the sun and called it the “water bulb flower”. Today it is the national flower of Mexico. Thank you, dear Alexander von Humboldt, that 200 years ago, while exploring the volcanic crater of Jorullo (Mexico), you also took some dahlia seeds!

Dahlias make an autumn walk a colourful experience – come by and dive in!

Our WAGEN – now in Sammatz as well!

Our food truck is now selling at the Michaelshof! From now on, you will find burgers & fries, cheese, bread and other Sammatzer delicacies every Sunday from 12pm to 6pm in the smaller parking lot in front of the Arche-Hof!

‹Der WAGEN› provides even more culinary enjoyment in Sammatz and at the same time helps us to implement a reasonable security concept. With the café, a separate ice cream counter, the farm store and now the food truck, there are four spacious outlets for to-go food – that means fewer lines and smaller crowds.

“Do you know where your food comes from?” Since last year, our food truck has been to Lüneburg’s weekly market, spoiling the city with regional Demeter products made in-house – in one half of the colorful wagon – and delicious street food in the other. The delicious organic burgers are a must-have – and, of course, available to non-meat eaters as well.

“We love organic food!” On that note, enjoy!

Tulip season in Sammatz

The cold weeks have delayed the start a little. Now the first plants are opening their flowers. Soon – as every April and May – Sammatz will again offer spectacular sights. You might expect to see tulip-covered landscapes like those at the Waldsee and in the other garden areas in the Netherlands – and in any case rather in a garden magazine than here ‘on our doorstep’.

With the blossoming of the slender beauties, spring finally begins. In the gardens of Sammatz, wherever you look, they shine above the still hesitant spring greenery.

Due to the current pandemic situation, our tulip festival will not take place. But it’s still tulip season – come and take a tour and marvel!

On the weekends of
1 & 2 May and
8 & 9 May
we hope to invite you to visit the garden and enjoy coffee and cake to go, including tulip sales from the farm.

Come by, it will be colourful here!

Michaelshof Onlineshop in a new design

Six weeks ago we opened our community’s online shop. Based on the experience we have since gained we have done a relaunch of the entire website and improved many details. We have also reduced the assortment of our goods. For now we will fully focus on Michaelshof goods, ranging from yummy bread and cheese to our beautiful postcard collections: many great products which are available online only in this shop.

We like the relaunch a lot, now it’s even more fun to go on a virtual Michaelshof shopping tour. What is your opinion? Have a look for yourselves and check the results here! (German only)

Event Season 2020 Terminated

Haus der Natur am Michaelshof Sammatz

Dear visitors and friends!

Due to the current situation no more events will happen in 2020.

Like all hosts and promoters we look back on a year full of canceled events. However, a few beautiful concerts at lake Waldsee and successful seminars like for instance the weekend on mushrooms in October leave our visitors and us with precious memories.

We are happy that we were able to carry on with our biological and environmental research projects without restriction.

We are looking forward to present our many event ideas centered around the Arche-Hof farm, the community and the marvellous worlds of plants and animals we wanted to share with you in 2020 again next year.

We hope that from March on it will be possible to host seminars and events again. You are all invited! We will display the programme soon on this website soon.

So – let’s knock on wood: See you next year!

Major Press Coverage

• Surprise: An attentive Spiegel Online reader has discovered an article with travel tips for autumn, which begins with an enthusiastic recommendation of Michaelshof: “If you ask Elisabeth Frenz where the perfect place is to end the summer on the Elbe, the Hamburg native immediately has a tip ready: “At Michaelshof Sammatz, a meeting place in Wendland that is more of a village than a farm. I could spend days here – at any time of the year”. Two paragraphs tell of the place with such verve that one really feels like going there.

We are very happy about the great appreciation!

At the beginning of August there was an article in the HAZ (Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung) with the inviting title “The Michaelshof in Wendland is a paradise and costs no entrance fee”, which has inspired many people to visit us.

We know, of course, that Sammatz is imperfect at every turn and in need of improvement (therefore far from being a paradise). But we think that this refers to a certain atmosphere in nature and around the place, which also pleases us ourselves. If others experience this in a similar way – wonderful!
