Bio-dynamic Farming

In Sammatz we adhere to Bio-dynamic agriculture as our method of farming. The overall vision of this is to heal nature using both traditional and modern agricultural means in order to prevent or reverse damage caused by destructive commercial farming.

Increasing soil quality

On a day to day level, this is achieved by farming in a way that nourishes the soil, enriching it with vitality so not to be eroded over time, in a way that industrial farming does so. The health of the plants, of the livestock and the quality of what is harvested is then increased. We believe that what is taken from the soil should be returned. No industrial chemicals such as weed killer or pesticides are added. With help from our volunteers, all garden maintenance such as weeding, planting, trimming or harvesting is done in natural ways. Traditional farming methods are fostered including the use of animal power to prepare the fields – you might find horses ploughing the fields in spring. We also make use of modern equipment such as tractors, as without such things we would struggle to accomplish the work.

Our food is healthy and untainted by potential harmful inorganic substances. What enters the soil is natural and it follows that what is taken out is natural as well. Whether you’re tasting Sammatz fruit, vegetables or dairy products – you can be sure that what you’re tasting will not contain any unexpected additives.

Organic farming, world wide and for almost hundred years

These bio-dynamic techniques were originally taught by Rudolf Steiner in his Koberwitz lectures in 1924, in order to provide a deeper understanding of agriculture from the spiritual scientific perspective of Anthroposophy.

Since then, bio-dynamic farming has grown in considerable influence – there are now over 3,500 bio-dynamic farms, across 670,000 hectares of land and a plethora of different products created under its certification trademark (Demeter).

Whenever quality is concerned, Demeter is valued – be it in top-class restaurants or, for a long time, in viticulture. Sammatz is proud to be part of this community, and proud to be doing our bit to enhance the knowledge and experience of bio-dynamic farming.

Special methods to encourage the growth of plants and vegetables are spread throughout the gardens and fields, such as the spraying of compost mixed with different kinds of manure. Naturally produced preparations are added to the compost in order to ameliorate its quality. We also take into account the cosmic influence on plant growth, for example the lunar cycles. Also to prevent the proliferation of undesirable weeds or pests, methods are used such as the burning of the seeds of these undesired plants and the spreading of their ashes on the appropriate garden bed.

Natural fodder – healthy food

The biodynamic method supposes that there is something spiritual in nature as well as in man which farmers can work with. Ridiculed by some as esotericism, this type of cultivation has been convincing for almost 100 years due to improved soil quality as well as the characteristics and quality of the food.

Regardless of if you also are familiar with Anthroposophy or bio-dynamic agriculture, Sammatz invites you to visit our natural farm and garden environment and sample our authentic organic products.
